Preparing for Your Rotation

SCHEDULING

While you are rotating with us we will strive to give you a well rounded experience within the Norman Regional system. This will include shifts at all of our campuses as well as both shifts with residents and direct 1:1 with faculty. You will receive your schedule 2-5 weeks prior to the start of your rotation (depending on when in the month you start). Students are scheduled for 14 shifts in a 28 day month rotation with one of those being an EMS shift for prehospital exposure.

Please submit any schedule requests by the 1st day of the month prior to when you start your rotation. For example, if you start a rotation in July, your schedule requests will be due by June 1. This gives us time to grant as many requests as possible. Please note, requests are just that – requests. They are not guaranteed time off. We will try to be as accommodating as possible. There will be opportunities to trade shifts with fellow students for any last minute requests but that will be the responsibility of the rotating student.

CURRICULUM

While you are at Norman Regional, students will have a designated curriculum for the rotation. We will explain more of this during Orientation. Prior to the rotation, we encourage students to look over the SAEM MS3 curriculum to ensure that you have a solid foundation off which to build.

We have didactics every Thursday morning and students are expected to attend all didactics during their rotation.

HOUSING

Norman Regional does not provide housing for your rotation so you will need to arrange that prior to starting your rotation. We do, however, have a list of recommended housing options available at your request. You may also inquire about any residents who may have rooms for rent for your rotation. Most students stay in Norman but there are also housing options available in Moore and Oklahoma City.

REQUIRED DRESS

Students will be required to be in scrubs while on shift both in the ED and while on EMS. Easily cleaned shoes are also recommended. Hospital scrubs are available if necessary. Please inquire regarding their location during your orientation if you need them.

SLOEs

For any auditioning students seeking a SLOE, please familiarize yourself with the E-Standard Letter of Evaluation form prior to your rotation. You may find additional resources and a copy of the SLOE form here. All SLOE requests must be placed during your rotation PRIOR TO OCTOBER 1.

PPE

Please be aware of your school’s and our hospital policy regarding personal protective equipment (PPE). We want you to learn with us, but also keep you safe.
